DON CAMILLO vs PEPPONE
Dunia sastra Giovanni Guareschi dari
Italia berlatarbelakangkan kota Brescello, tepatnya di kabupaten Emilia
era 1950an, sehabis Perang Dunia II. Don Camillio dan Peponne melambangkan
pertentangan antara dua kultur yang beda di masa itu yang bertarung sengit
untuk membela pahamnya masing-masing. Pada satu sisi adalah himpunan nilai
tradisional Katolik Italia, mereka yang mendukung Partai Demokrat, diwakili
oleh Don Camillio. Sisi yang lain adalah konsep komunis revolusioner yang
diwakili sang walikota Peppone. Namun pergelutan politik ini, yang pada
kehidupan nyata berlanjut sengit selama puluhan tahun, dituturkan dalam
karya-karya novel Giovanni Guareschi sebagai alasan untuk berhikmah secara
melucu dengan menyindir halus karakter-karakter khas orang Italia. Seheboh
apa pun permusuhan yang ada, pada akhirnya terbaca juga bahwa Don Camillo
dan Peppone sebenarnya adalah dua sisi dari koin yang sama. Dua orang Italia

The literary world of Giovanni Guareschi is
set in Brescello, in 1950s Reggio Emilia, shortly after the end of the
Second World War. Don Camillo and Peppone symbolize the clash between two
opposing cultures which, precisely in the Fifties, crossed swords as they
defended two different philosophies of living. On the one side was the
traditional social context of Catholic Italy, staunch supporters of the
Democristiano party, represented by parish priest Don Camillo, and on the
other the revolutionary communist model, represented by the town Mayor,
Peppone. But the political wrangling, which in real life was fierce and went
on for decades, in Guareschi's novels becomes a way of reflecting in a
good-natured, fun, sarcastic way, upon the anthropological models of the
average Italian. When all is said and done, Don Camillo and Peppone are two
sides of the one coin: two Italians with hearts of gold who, behind the
facade of hostility, actually need one another. Fellow-villagers, they
understand and respect one another: so, often split when it comes to local
affairs, they are united in the face of outside adversities. They represent

Kedamaian dan
ketenteraman sebuah dusun kecil di Italia terganggu oleh suatu

The peace and tranquillity of a
rural Italian village is disrupted by the on-going hostility between a
Catholic parish priest, Don Camillo, and the newly elected Communist
Mayor, Peppone. Their very public wrangles reflect the schism between
the two halves of the community, half supporting the communist party,
the others standing for traditional right-wing values, personified by
the retired school mistress Madame Cristina and Don Camillo himself.
With Camillo and Peppone arguing over building a new Communist
headquarters and farmers going on strike over a tax dispute, it looks as
if nothing will heal the rift…

"Don Camillo e l'onorevole Peppone" adalah
film ketiga dari seri film komedi yang mengambil cerita dari novel-novel
karya Giovanni Guareschi. Kali ini aktor-aktor kocak Fernandel dan Gino
Cervi kembali bertemu sebagai pendeta Don Camillo dan walikota komunis
Peppone. Di dalam cerita ini mereka bersaing dalam suatu pemungutan
suara lokal, tetapi keduanya saling tidak mau menang. Don Camillo
berjanji akan menolong Peppone lulus dalam suatu ujian kualifikasi yang
sangat penting, tapi dengan syarat dibangunkan sebuah rumah ibadah. Film
ini jauh lebih konyol ketimbang yang dua sebelumnya, "Don Camillo"
(1951) dan "Le Retour de Don Camillo" (1953). "Don Camillo e
l'onorevole Peppone" was the third in a series of film comedies based on
characters created by Giovanni Gareschi. Fernandel and Gino Cervi return
as, repectively, resourceful Italian village priest Don Camillo and his
friendly enemy, Communist mayor Peppone. This time, the two adversaries
are pitted against each other in a local election, even though neither
one wants to win. Don Camillo comes out on top by promising to help
Peppone pass an important qualifying exam, in exchange for a new church
construction project. Most slapsticky than previous "Don Camillo"
entries, the highlight of Don Camillo e l'on Peppone is a zany

Karena dipanggil oleh atasannya di Roma, Don
Camillo terpaksa harus meninggalkan gerejanya di Brescello. Musuh
bebuyutannya, Peppone, sang walikota komunis, kebetulan juga harus

the higher rankings in Rome, Don Camillo had to leave its parish of
Brescello. Its rival eternal, Peppone, the communist mayor, is also
transferred to the capital after being elected senator. But both need
only one incident to return to their hometown. They learn that a quarrel
has just burst in their village between the Church and the town council
in connection with the construction of a "house of the people" over an
