scope of tour
GedungDUA8 (building 28) was established on 28 October 2001 by an individual
traveller and documentary film-maker, Dea Sudarman. In the uniquely designed
building, she dedicated three levels of spaces to hundreds of artefacts and
everyday items she had collected from the lives of about 20 different indigenous
peoples in eastern parts of Indonesia. These storytelling pieces were gifts,
discarded items and traded goods which are now lovingly presented in groupings
by spatial-designer Pincky Sudarman to impart small yet revealing glimpses into
the sometimes secluded lives of these ethnic communities.
galeriMusim features collections from the peoples of Dayak (Kalimantan),
Mamasa-Toraja (Sulawesi), Bajau (Sulawesi), Sumba (Western Lesser Sundas), Timor
(West Timor), Lamalera (Eastern Lesser Sundas), Tanimbar (Maluku Islands), Kei
(Maluku Islands), Kisar (Maluku Islands), Leti (Maluku Islands), Teluk
Cenderawasih (Papua), Biak (Papua), Serui (Papua), Sentani (Papua), Mek (Papua),
Korowai (Papua), Lani (Papua), Dani (Papua) and prehistoric cave-painting tunnel
created from photographic composites of pictograms found in coastal caves between
the villages of Kokas and Goras (Papua).
galeriMbis is a permanent exhibition of artefacts and dailywares of the Asmat
people in Papua. The comprehensive collection includes various sizes and shapes
of ancestor-poles (mbis), spears, shields, bone-knives, soul boats, drums,
flutes and masks.
galeriMbitoro is a rooftop space with generous natural-lighting. It is dedicated
to the little-known Kamoro people whose white-washed carvings and handicrafts
reflect the white-sand beaches where the marshlands meet the open seas in
southern coasts of Papua.

The Korowai
English | 30 minutes | 1987
Director >> Dea Sudarman
Produced by The Social Science Foundation of Indonesia
In Irian Jayas southwest interior along the Dairam River lives a semi-nomadic
Korowai people who are known as the tree-dwellers of Irian Jaya. It was only
in the 1970s that these tribesmen were located by pilots of Mission Aviation
Fellowship flying over the area. Finally in 1982 a missio post was built in the
area, though the coming years were faced with trial and error to establish
contacts with the elusive Korowai. These tribesmen have no written language,
have yet to discover the wheel and who, whilst living near water, have neither
canoes nor boats. The Korowai build their houses on trees principally because
they believe bad spirits live on the ground. The documentary film traces the
making of these tree-houses which absorbed about six months time and follows
closely the life of the Korowai during this period.
The Asmat
English | 54 minutes | 1982
Director >> Dea Sudarman + Yasuko Ichioka
Produced by Dea Sudarman
Awards >> 1982 Golden Matzzooco Award (Dei Popoli Film Festival, Florence,
Italy) + 1986 Outstanding Film of Hawaii Film Festival
Bounded by the Juliana and Pomats rivers on southwestern Irian Jaya and washed
by the Arafura sea, there lies a vast alluvial mud plateau which has neither
stone metal nor any form of pottery. It is the home of approximately 70,000
Asmat people. Isolated by awesome natural barriers, contact with the outside
world has really only developed since the end of World War II. Such isolation
has led to the development of a unique culture rich in symbolic imagery that
relates to their cultural heritage of spirit and ancestor worship. The culture
of Asmat, which is founded upon the wars of tribalistic revenge, is now in a
transitional state. The arts and crafts sustained in this unique way are slowly
changing with the Asmats role in a wider society. The Asmats believe that their
peace and security rests on the spiritual bond with their ancestors. The Bisj
ceremonies (the erection of ancestor-worship poles) are central in the life of
the Asmats. The film traces the making and dedication of the poles whilst
capturing the day to day life of the Asmats during the period.
